Power Point for Cornell Notes

These notes will help students complete the weekly grammar homework. 

Students also have a small red grammar textbook which was checked out to them to reference, if needed.

Poetry Unit 

Please make sure you check your Aeries account and make up any of these assignments as needed by March 24th. You will be having a performance task during the last week of March.

Complete Cornell Notes for the included Power Point. You will need them for class on Thursday, and the remainder of the unit. 

The Power of Persuasion

Together we will identify elements of persuasion, and analyze articles for these elements. We will then identify our own point of view of the issue, and create our argument for our persuasive essay. The essay will include in-text citations, MLA formatting, a citations page, as well as a new format for our paragraphs utilizing "say mean matter". This will be an electronic submission of the essay, with more details to follow.

NewsELA

We will be spending time once per week to complete NewsELA articles, which have been already assigned to you. Please make sure that you complete all 3 by the end of the triad, as they will be counted towards your grade. 

Making a Historical Connection:        

Multi-Genre Research Project

Introduction to project:

English language arts class is more than reading fictional stories and writing poetry. We study real people, read non-fiction texts, and connect our learning to other subject areas. You will research a former president, previously reviewed in your history class, and create a multi-genre research project. You will research a variety of sources, and create a variety of items to portray your knowledge of the president you have chosen. All items will need to be included in your works cited, MLA format of course. Please be sure to review your rubric prior to starting the project.

Complete the included reading, marking the text, and the assignment on the page. It is that easy!

Grammar Project: College Edition

We will be research colleges, and combining our content knowledge to present our college posters. This is an authentic performance task as it is a summative assessment. 

What are the elements of fiction, how do writer's use them, and how do we use them in our own writing?

These are interesting and relevant non-fiction texts that you can use for reading logs.

MLA Power Point, quick guide, and Flip Book

These handouts are to help you with the completion of your reading logs each week. They will be handed out in class, and I would recommend page protectors. However, should you need to make additional copies they are here for you. 

Each week you will be assigned a reading log to complete while reading your AR book. These will not only ensure that you are reading 30 minutes each night, but that you are comprehending what you are reading as well as help you pass the AR tests. 

Each week a different log will be assigned, and you will not know which one until that Monday. These are being provided for you here, in case you should lose your reading log after it has been provided to you for the week. 

Using your notes, and example letter, write a letter to me about your future job.
