Course Description:

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares students for college readiness, for entrance into four-year colleges, and for success.  It is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long course.  Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities and academic success skills.  In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic growth.

AVID Secondary students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.  It targets students in the academic middle – B, C, and even D students – with the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.  AVID places students on the college track, requiring them to enroll in toughest courses, such as Honors. Support is provided to the students in their rigorous coursework to improve their academic record and begin college preparation.
